The reaction against Trump and Vance after the debacle was immediate, with the internet flooding with biased comments and opinions that Trump and Vance were bullying Zelenskyy, however nobody bothered to ask an important question - What happened before that dispute?
Besides that question, we should also ask ourselves; Shouldn't we be happy that the current President of the United States - whoever he is - wants to end the war and suffering in Ukraine, where hundreds of thousands of young men are dying in the front line in an unnecessary war?
But, going back to the Friday Feb. 28 debacle in the Oval Office; The meeting did not begin as we saw on camera in the media, in fact the clash between Trump and Zelenskyy did not take place until over 42 minutes into the meeting. What happened in the preceding 42 minutes? It’s an important question that the majority of the people did not ask blindsided by the opposition propaganda, opinions and comments from biased people who decided long ago that they hate Trump, therefore whatever he says or tries to do, they’ll oppose him no matter what. Some people don’t even know why they hate Donald J. Trump; they just jump into the bandwagon and follow along with whatever is said about Trump without discerning what is said.
President Trump started the meeting graciously by complimenting President Zelenskyy and the bravery of the Ukrainian soldiers, and saying that he was honoured to have President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office and showing respect. Mr. Zelenskyy in return thanked President Trump for the invitation and that he hoped that the mineral deal would be the real step to security guarantees. He then took out a series of photos to show to President Trump; they pictured the Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Russian captivity, to which Trump expressed sympathy and said “that’s why we need this war to end.”
Contrary to what critics want you to believe; it was President Zelenskyy who publicly challenged President Trump in his face first - several times - in front of the cameras. President Trump kept his composure in the face of being repeatedly contradicted and antagonised.
Zelenskyy openly contradicted the US President when talking about Europe’s contributions to the war as Zelenskyy was saying that the European friends “gave a lot, they did give a lot” to which President Trump remarked “they gave a lot but they gave much less” than the US, and again Zelenskyy contradicted Trump with an emphatic “No!”. This is where they both leaned in towards each other in this little disagreement, and Trump jokingly and in a warm friendly manner touched Zelenskyy’s arm, as a form of showing that he “agrees to disagree”, to which they laughed it off and kept going.
A few minutes later Zelenskyy again publicly contradicted President Trump over his assertion that the Russian President Putin never broke a deal with Ukraine during Trump’s first term in Office, insisting that he “will never accept a ceasefire without security guarantees” and that “maybe the President (Trump) is right (...) but this document is not enough” referring to the mineral deal. And while Zelenskyy talked about this topic for several minutes and on why he didn’t trust Putin, President Trump never interrupted him.
Aside from his vocal criticism, interruptions and challenges of President Trump, before the open argument that we all saw in the segment released by the mainstream media, Mr. Zelenskyy body-language was also clearly insolent and disrespectful; he was continuously making faces, nodding, and when President Trump was talking about not wanting any more deaths on either side, Zelenskyy raised his eyebrows and sighed, and again interrupted Trump, with a needless comment, shook his head, shrugged, sighed, rolled his eyes several more times, while President Trump was making his point on why he wanted to end the war.
After a couple of times contradicting President Trump, before the flare-up between the two; Mr. Zelenskyy pushed hard on his luck by interrupting the US President, again, saying that he was wrong, and even going as far as to saying that President Trump is getting his information in the form of propaganda directly from President Putin, that Ukraine doesn’t have cities destroyed beyond recognition as stated by Trump. So, Zelenskyy interrupts Trump as he’s speaking, saying that he’s wrong only to then admit that Trump is right that there has been a lot of destruction in some cities, but there are cities that are still “alive” - maybe Zelenskyy meant “intact” instead of “alive”.
Zelenskyy was continuously pushing the buttons of the US President and his delegation; he was bringing up the security guarantees and continuously contradicting and correcting Trump. He was openly antagonistic and disrespectful, you don’t need to be a body-language expert to see his insolent behaviour all through the meeting, even towards some reporters by interrupting them when they wanted to ask questions. There was a series of minor and cumulative serious provocations, and antagonistic behaviour on the part of Zelenskyy. At one point when Vice-President Vance tried to diffuse the apparent tension by responding to a reporter regarding the question if President Trump was aligning with Russia, Vance said "for four years the United States of America, we had a President who stood up at press conferences and talked tough about Vladimir Putin, and then Putin invaded Ukraine and destroyed a significant chunk of the country; the path to peace and the path to prosperity is maybe engaging in diplomacy. We've tried the pathway of Joe Biden of thumping our chest and pretending that the President of the United States's words mattered more than the President of the United States's actions. What makes America a good country is America engaging in diplomacy. That's what President Trump is doing." to which Zelenskyy sardonically said "can I ask you?..." and Vance said "sure!", so Zelensky continued with irony "yeah? okay...(..)" and started his rant that since 2014 Ukraine was occupied by Russia and nobody stopped "him" until 2022, and then addressed the sitting Vice-President, in that critical moment when tension was high, using his first name saying: “what kind of diplomacy JD are you speaking about?” which was not appropriate in that argumentative dynamic, and to which the Vice-President JD Vance said “I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country”.
Mr. Zelenskyy was looking insolently at the Vice-President with his arms crossed on his chest, and interrupted the Vice-President several times, talking to him insolently with his chin raised up making funny faces all along as the Vice-President was speaking, even at some point saying 'cyka', and that’s when Mr. JD Vance said “with respect, Mr. President, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media. (...). And do you think it's respectful to come into the Oval Office of the United States of America and attack the Administration that is trying to prevent the destruction of your country?” to which Zelenskyy continued with his arms crossed to lecture the US Vice-President about the war and the “nice ocean” and that they don’t feel it now, but they’ll feel it in the future. And that’s when President Trump - understandably angry with the veiled threat - told Zelenskyy to not tell them, the American people, what they’re going to feel, and that he, Zelenskyy, is in no position to dictate what the Americans are going to feel, and that he was not in a very good position; that Zelenskyy was gambling with world war 3, what he was doing was very disrespectful to the country (USA), that “it’s going to be very hard thing to do business like that.” and that Zelenskyy does not have the cards, with the US he has the cards, without the US he doesn’t have any cards, i.e., he cannot win the war (or reach a peace settlement) without the support of the USA.
Some facts remain: We don't know what happened before the meeting took place, what was said and what attitudes and behaviours the US President and his delegation and officials witnessed before. Zelenskyy even had the cheek to call Vance "cyka" while he was speaking to him, explaining what he meant by using diplomacy to resolve the Ukraine/Russia conflict. And as thoroughly described above, from start to end Zelenskyy behaved poorly towards the current American Administration, simply because they refuse to feed his personal war against Putin.
Why did Zelenskyy go to the White House to antagonise President Trump?
It was clear that Zelenskyy went in with a sense of entitlement and with a strategy, perhaps some strategy and advice he had received from the Democrats with whom he met before meeting with President Trump. Perhaps he thought - as the actor he is, and as in the movies - he could own the President of the United States of America in front of the cameras, i.e., he went in to “bite the hand that feeds him” which is confounding considering that the USA has already supported Zelenskyy with 350 billions dollars as President Trump stated. Every diplomat knows there is a risk in confronting another world leader in this manner, and in particular when you are coming to ask for more support.
The absurdity of people following along with the accusation that Trump and Vance planned to embarrass Zelenskyy in front of the cameras is perplexing… It seems to me, from what was said, and what I saw; the gestures and behaviour of all those involved in that meeting, there was no “planned ambush” as some democrat leaders say. It was Zelenskyy who wanted the meeting in front of the media’s cameras, as he admitted to it in a Fox News interview after the debacle. And after all the facts, and knowing that it was a mistake to antagonise President Trump, he’s now backpedaling and saying that he wants to meet again with President Trump to continue the conversations, however President Trump was clear that his door is open if Zelenskyy is ready for a peaceful settlement as it’s not feasible to continue to fund a senseless war forever, and as President Trump said Zelenskyy's not ready for peace. When he's ready he can come back for talks and sign the peace deal.
Another thing that is perplexing is the reaction and the theatrics of support by the European leaders, when we all know that, aside from the billions they’re planning to give away, they don’t have the military capabilities to support that war against Russia, and this begs the questions: What is the purpose of sending all those billions into a black hole as the Ukraine war, is it a huge money laundry machine? Who are those gaining from this war?
